What is JKD Concepts?

JKD was developed by Bruce Lee as an answer to the problems he encountered when trying to apply his Wing Chun training. When he moved to North America he found that the classical Wing Chun stances and foot work were not effective against westerners who were much larger than him. He began to reasarch other arts to improve his footwork, timing, and understanding of different ranges of combat. He developed several concepts that are still valid to this day.

Economy of motion

  • Simple direct techniques, with no wasted motion.

Longest weapon to the closest target.

  • The idea is that it should be more difficult for your opponent to be able to defend as they will need to move further to get out of range.

Five ways of attack: Direct attack, Indirect attack, immobilization attack, progressive indirect attack, attack by drawing.

  • The five ways of attack is an excellent tool for teaching people to be more fluid and flowing in their movements.

Five ranges of combat: Kicking, Boxing, trapping, standing grappling (clinch), ground grappling.

  • The whole idea of being effective in different ranges of combat could be considered the begining of MMA.
